I think that I am the only one in my college prep school who actually truly enjoys the books we get assigned to read. You would think, with a bunch of “smart” kids in one school, I wouldn’t be the only one who looks at summer reading as something to do. Well, I guess I am one of the few that spends their Friday nights bleaching their retainers and playing with their cats…

Anywho, I have to read three books each year of highschool for summer reading and the books this year are:
Flowers for Algernon
A Northern Light
The Color of Water

So far, I finished The Color of Water, a book about James McBride trying to figure out his white, Jewish mother’s past. I personally thought it was pretty good, although it was kind of confusing with each chapter being James’s perspective and the next chapter being his mother’s, and so on and so forth. I am currently reading Flowers for Algernon and let me tell you.

it is damned good! It’s about a boy who is mentally retarded (I know that a lot of people don’t care for that word, but that is how they describe him in the book) for most of his 33 years. He goes to a college for the mentally challenged, and he is the one student picked out of all of them to get an operation done to greatly increase his IQ more than double. The operation is tried on a mouse named Algernon first, and once they see that it works, they do it on him. Soon enough, he does get smarter, but his emotions are still one of a boy. I haven’t finished it yet, but it is such a good book and I really recommend it!

I’m not as excited about A Northern Light, but we’ll see.
What writing style in books do you find the most difficult to read? (i.e. switching perspectives, etc)
Do you usually enjoy school books?
What was your favorite book that you have read for school?

Alright, I’m off the to pool! Have a great day, ya’ll.
